THE STORY OF PANDORA
After Prometheus, a fire god and divine trickster, had stolen fire from heaven and bestowed it upon mortals, Zeus, the king of the gods, was furious and determined to counteract this blessing. He commissioned Hephaestus (a god of fire and patron of craftsmen) to fashion a woman, Pandora, out of earth, upon whom the gods bestowed their choicest gifts. Pandora was also given a jar containing all manner of misery and evil. Zeus then sent her to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother, who fell in love with her at first sight. Forgetting the warning of his brother Prometheus, Epimetheus made Pandora his wife who then, out of curiosity, opened the box after the wedding. All evils flew out of the box and over the earth. Hope alone remained inside, the lid having been shut down before she could escape.
