"Martyre de Saint Denis" by Léon Bonnat, 1880

This stunning porcelain plate features the 1880 "Martyre de Saint Denis" painting by Léon Bonnat.

Saint Denis was a Christian martyr from the third century. As the Bishop of Paris he converted many to Christianity with his speeches, eventually alarming the local Roman priests. They killed Denis by beheading him on the highest hill in Paris (now Montmartre). Denis didn't agree with the place of his martyrdom and the corpse is said to have picked up his severed head and walked ten kilometers, finally collapsing at the place were he wanted to be buried, the place were now the Basilica of St. Denis, the burial place of the Kings of France stands.

This plate has been kiln fired to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit to permanently fuse the image to the porcelain, ensuring there will be no wear, fading or flaking, even after prolonged use.

The image is food- and dishwasher safe, we do recommend hand washing if your plate or cup contains gold. Dishes with gold details cannot be microwaved, they will spark.
